In many ways, the LA Clippers’ season coming down to an extra five minutes was fitting.

They’ve done nothing but play to the limits of what their bodies can physically do all season. So why would Sunday afternoon in San Francisco be any different?

With a playoff berth on the line and a 50-win season firmly in their sights, the Clippers found a way, much like they had all year long, to scrap and claw and snatch a victory, toppling the Golden State Warriors 124-119 in overtime.

“It feels good. It feels good,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said after his team clinched a postseason berth as the Western Conference 5-seed.

Before the season began, pundits and prognosticators alike picked the Clippers to, at best, be a play-in team. They played on Sunday to avoid that distinction.

But, regardless of the result of Sunday’s game, they still drastically outplayed expectations. Their over/under win total for the season was set at 35.5. They blew past that on March 12.

“I think our group has been playing with a chip on their shoulder all year because of that [preseason disrespect],” Lue added. “We just found ways to win. We found ways to win no matter whose night it was, we kinda just featured that guy, played hard defensively, we competed, and we played together. On nights like this, this is when it really means something. You make it to the playoffs, all the hard work you put in throughout the course of the season, it’s huge when it comes down to this point. I’m just proud of our guys. Being counted out and staying the course and playing with that chip on their shoulder all year long.”
